If you are a small business or a small enterprise, being targeted by cyber criminals halfway across the globe has probably never crossed your mind. After all, there are bigger businesses out there to target and your little computer or web server is not worth the bother, right? Well, wrong.

Small businesses are actually easily becoming some of the most appealing targets for nefarious individuals that have probably never stepped foot near your city, state, or even country.

Protecting your small business isn’t the only thing you’re “protecting” – you’re also protecting your clients, customers and all their data stored in your system.

Here are 4 tips to safeguard your small business:-

1) Educate your staff in basic in security principles.

Set up basic security practices and policies for staff, such as requiring strong passwords, and establish appropriate internet use guidelines that detail penalties for violating company cyber security policies. Establish rules of behaviour describing how to handle and protect customer information and other vital data.

2) Keep your computers clean.

The best defence against viruses, malware and other online threats is having the latest security software, web browser and operating system. Have your antivirus software run a scan after each time you update and install other key software updates as soon as they are available.

3) Provide firewall security for your internet connection.

A firewall is a set of related programs that prevent outsiders from accessing data on a private network. Make sure the operating system’s firewall is enabled or install free firewall software available online. If employees work from home, ensure that their home systems are protected by a firewall.

4) Make backup copies of important business data and information.

Regularly back up the data on all computers. Critical data includes word processing documents, electronic spreadsheets, databases, financial files, human resources files and accounts receivable/payable files. Back up data automatically if possible, or at least weekly, and store the copies either off-site or in the cloud.

Protecting your business in cyberspace is no longer an option these days. It is critical that you be proactive in safeguarding your business – this not only protects your company but your clients and their data as well. On top of that, you’ll less likely be targeted by cyber criminals.
